3 Quick Wins When Starting A Clean Beauty Journey

So, you want to clean up your act for the sake of the planet? Your beauty routine is a good place to start, and here’s how to get going…

There’s no doubt about it, the clean beauty movement has gone mainstream, with a focus on stripped-back products containing natural ingredients that love your skin and hair along with the planet. But where to even begin if it’s not something you’ve given much thought until now? Our advice goes a little something like this: take a deep breath. There, that feels better, right? Next, you need to accept that putting every single product you own in the trash and starting again isn’t necessary. Instead, here are three simple things to keep in mind when building a clean beauty routine…

Be open minded

Here’s the thing, there’s no set definition for ‘clean beauty.’ Brands and retailers are left to set their own standards, and work towards targets they themselves control. At Love Beauty and Planet, we like to empower people to share little acts of love that keep our planet beautiful. For one person, that might mean knowing exactly where the ingredients in their shampoo came from (something we love to talk about – check out our ingredient stories when you get a minute). For another person, it might be switching to a vegan routine, with the animals we share our planet with in mind (did we mention we’re cruelty-free and vegan certified?). For another, it’s about choosing to use products with ingredients that are safe for our skin, hair and the Earth. We like to think of ourselves as clean-beauty enablers – whatever feels like a realistic reason to switch for you, we’re here to help. 

Getting too caught up in what’s right or wrong when it comes to clean beauty can lead to overwhelm and inaction, which is the opposite of what we want. Focus on the hero ingredients

Just because we’re cheerleaders for the natural ingredients our planet provides, that’s not to say non-natural ingredients are the villain of the story. In fact, a tiny amount of harmless non-naturals can be essential for keeping beauty formulations fresh and working at maximum capacity. For example, our gloss-giving conditioners are made up of at least 97% naturally derived content, which also includes water. We like to be transparent about our ingredients (because sharing’s caring), so if you’re wondering what ‘naturally derived’ actually means, here goes: ‘If the ingredient is unchanged from its natural state or has a natural source and has undergone some processing but retains greater than 50% of its original natural structure,’ that means it’s naturally derived.

Choose style AND substance

At Love Beauty and Planet, we heart pretty packaging, but we’ve also worked hard to find the sweet spot between pretty and planet-loving. Ever noticed how our bottles aren’t 100% see-through? That’s because we use post-consumer recycled plastic (let’s call it PCR, shall we?), which, in layman’s terms, means plastic that’s already been used for something else, then recycled to make our bottles. And because being honest makes us feel all warm inside, we’d like to add that our caps aren’t currently PCR. But we’re totally working on it, so watch this space!
